I write, in Flannery O’Connor’s words, “to discover what I know”. Writing provides a means to formulate, organize, and lay out my many and varied thoughts. To date, it is the single best way I have found to keep my thinking systematic and disciplined.
The title of the blog comes from the novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha, or just Don Quixote. Quixote, who had delusions of grandeur, famously “tilted” – jousted – with windmills he imagined to be giants. The phrase refers to battling imaginary enemies based on (often misapplied) heroic, romantic, and idealistic justifications. I chose this title to remind myself not to get carried away as I grapple with (what I consider to be) the important questions in life, and also to remind myself that even though there’s injustice and irrationality in the world, there’s also a lot of good, and by most measures, life is improving all the time.
